Sometimes I slept until noon. If my sister was feeling generous, I’d wake up to the smell of spaghetti sauce simmering, every slow burp of the thick tomato paste like a puff of a smoke signal, telling me to open my eyes, to stretch out my arms, and to get out of bed.

My first summer in America was wonderful in many ways. Unlike Korea, I had two and a half months off instead of two and a half weeks, and more important, I was in the luxurious comfort of industrial-strength air-conditioning. In our apartment we had a monstrous pair of Westinghouse units that could freeze the rooms in fifteen minutes, and according to Reggie, all of Peddlers Town was kept at a shopper-drawing temperature of seventy-two degrees.

The best part of this prolonged summer of freedom was that I was no longer forced to learn. I didn’t despise school, but I wasn’t exactly in love with it, either. Given the choice, I preferred to learn by osmosis rather than through the rigors of academia, by watching The Smurfs and The Fall Guy instead of writing a vocabulary word and its meaning fifteen times in a notebook.
